Madaster

Munich, September 2022

Madaster – an innovative startup from Germany – brought to the 4th Smart Building Smart Construction Innovation World Cup® 2021 their unique solution. Madaster devloped a global online platform that enables the circular use of products and materials in the construction industry.

Let’s have a throwback chat with the Madaster team and find out more about their sustainable solution disrupting the AEC Industry.

1. INTRODUCE YOURSELF! – HOW DID IT ALL START?

The idea for Madaster came from the German architect Thomas Rau. Against the background of finite raw materials for the construction industry, he sees buildings as material depots for the future. The company Madaster itself was founded in the Netherlands in 2017 and has also been represented in Germany with its online platform since the beginning of 2021. Building information can be easily uploaded (via IFC), added to, and managed there. Madaster also automatically creates a material passport that provides information about the recyclable materials as well as their proportions and location in the property. The name “Madaster” describes exactly the core function of our platform and is a combination of the words material and cadastre.

2. WHAT ARE THE KEY MILESTONES YOU HAVE REACHED SO FAR?

Since January of this year, we have been able to build a team of 33 supporters in the form of well-known companies from the construction and real estate industry with our Kennedy program. In November, we also already recorded around 60 buildings on our online platform, with Edge Südkreuz being the first property with 100 percent data fullness. Overall, Madaster is active in 7 countries and has more then 3.000 buildings registered with more than 10 million square meter.

3. WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU HAVE FACED?

BIM doesn’t equal BIM. However, if BIM is applied according to international standards it can be uploaded on Madaster automatically. This is the core of our understanding. Data has to be digital and the processing of data has to work automatically. This is the only way to scale up from a level of pilot projects to a large scale approach where real impact regarding resource use, CO2 emission and waste elimination happens.

4. WHAT IS COMING IN THE NEAR FUTURE?

After completing the pilot phase with 33 Kennedys in November, the Madaster platform has been open to all companies in the construction and real estate industry as well as private owners since 30 November 2021. Our next step is to inspire as many people as possible with the topic of circularity to have a lasting positive effect on the circular economy. We aim to upload more than 15.000 buildings in the coming three years. In addition, the development of further countries is on our agenda.

5. DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE 12th Smart Building Smart Construction INNOVATION WORLD CUP®?

The 4th SMART BUILDING / SMART CONSTRUCTION INNOVATION WORLD CUP® showed a high level of very good solutions to make the use of buildings and in particular the planning of sustainable buildings more efficient. I was impressed by the high degree of innovation of all the solutions. Moreover, the world cup showed the importance of green and sustainable solutions and the need for digitalisation!
